A few hints about the city

We find Caltanissetta, the provincial capital that has about 60 thousand inhabitants, right in the heart of Sicily. From the geomorphological point of view, the territory presents interesting elements. The city of Caltanissetta is in fact located in a basin bordering an ancient area of volcanic origin, the Collina dei vulcanelli, not far from the Capodarso Nature Reserve.

There are testimonies that bring the origin of this city back to the Bronze Age. In all likelihood, the first urban agglomeration dates back to the period in which the Sicani (Italic people of Sicily) dominated the island. The original settlement was located at the foot of Mount Jebel Habib (also called "Happy Mountain").

During the Greek period, however, the urban core took the name of "Nissa". When the Arabs came to Sicily to dominate it, Nissa took on the appearance of a fortress. The name "Nissa" was changed to the Saracen one of "Qala't al-nisa" (Castle of the women), from which the current name of "Caltanissetta" is then derived.

To learn about the history of Caltanissetta it may be useful to visit the archaeological excavations of Sabucina, located just outside the city. Other interesting finds are found at the Archaeological Museum of Caltanissetta. In the surroundings of this locality there are other ancient settlements that are worth visiting to reconstruct millennia of history.

In the medieval period Caltanissetta was enclosed in a fortress which was later enlarged during the Norman domination. The remains of the fortress, which was given the name of "Castello di Pietrarossa", are still visible today.

After centuries, the majestic Castle was destroyed in 1567, due to a violent earthquake.

Equally interesting are the churches in Caltanissetta, rich in ancient frescoes and decorations. To visit, in addition to the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Nova, also the Church of Sant’Agata al Collegio (dating back to the early seventeenth century), the Church of San Giovanni, the Church of San Domenico and that of San Sebastiano.

There is no shortage of buildings of historical interest such as Palazzo Testasecca, Palazzo Benitende, Palazzo del Carmine, Palazzo Moncada. Among the monuments of historical and artistic value there is the Triton Fountain, built in 1956 dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Folklore and traditions are the pivots on which tourism also rests. There are always many visitors who come to Caltanissetta to attend the evocative Holy Week rites.
